Glashütte's Shining Light
The Lux is the only NOMOS timepiece to feature a barrel-shaped (tonneau) case. It also stands out for its use of white and rose gold, uncommon materials for this renowned German manufacturer. The name "Lux" is multifaceted. In Latin, it means light, clarity, brilliance, and enlightenment. In physics, it's a unit used to measure illumination. Its similarity to the word "luxury" is also likely not lost on NOMOS Glashütte. Alongside the Lambda, the Lux is the closest thing in NOMOS' catalog to a luxury watch if for no other reason than its gold cases.
Founded in 1990, this company from southeast Germany is best known for their flat cases and simple designs inspired by the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s. The Tangente, NOMOS' first watch, is the perfect example of this and remains the manufacturer's most famous and successful model to date. The Lux and Lambda both debuted many years later in 2013.
NOMOS entered new territory with the barrel-shaped case of the Lux. Before then, this manufacturer had almost exclusively used round cases. Despite its shape, it's impossible to mistake the Lux for anything other than a NOMOS thanks to its minimalist design. Its small seconds dial at 6 o'clock is another typical style choice from this Saxon brand. In white gold, the Lux measures 36 x 40.5 mm. At 34 x 38.5 mm, rose gold models look particularly nice on smaller wrists. Larger watches come on a black cordovan leather strap, while their smaller counterparts feature a brown strap in the same material. Cordovan leather comes from horses and is especially robust and water resistant.

Detailed Price Information
The pre-owned market for the NOMOS Lux collection is still relatively small. Most models up for resale are still in mint condition. The Lux is available with a number of dial colors. However, the center of each dial features a white silver-plated circle with the central time display and small seconds dial. The rest of the dial is a different color, as seen in the bright lemon yellow Lux Zikade. This rose gold watch is anything but subtle and costs around 11,500 USD.
The other rose gold models are known as the Lux Hermelin and the Lux Zobel. The gray dial of the Hermelin bears the strongest resemblance to Bauhaus design. On the other hand, the Zobel is a deep eggplant purple and feels like something from the 1950s. Prices for both models sit around 13,500 USD.
White gold Lux models are simple yet modern. You can choose between a light blue or solid white dial. Their larger cases mean they make the ideal men's watch and are the perfect choice to pair with evening wear. Plan to spend about 17,500 USD for a NOMOS Lux in white gold.
If you prefer square cases and are looking for an automatic watch, you may enjoy the NOMOS Tetra Neomatik in stainless steel. Its dial comes in white, midnight blue, or silver. The in-house caliber DUW 3001 powers these timepieces. Launched in 2015, this movement caused quite a stir thanks to its height of only 3.2 mm, comparably fair price, and precision. You can purchase a never-worn Tetra Neomatik 28 Midnight Blue for around 2,900 USD.
The Caliber DUW 2002: Two Barrels and an 84-Hour Power Reserve
NOMOS equips the Lux with the in-house caliber DUW 2002. This movement is wound manually and boasts an 84-hour power reserve thanks to its two barrels. The DUW 2002 features a rhodium-plated three-quarter plate with a sunburst pattern and 23 rubies, five of which sit in polished and screwed gold chatons. The balance cock is engraved by hand with hand-rounded and polished edges. NOMOS outfits the Lux with a sapphire glass case back so you can see this precious movement at work.
Fine adjustments in six positions guarantee this timepiece's accuracy. In fact, the DUW 2002 meets the standards for a mechanical chronometer caliber. At its widest, it is 32.6 mm across, and the entire movement is only 3.6 mm thick. The balance springs made of Nivarox 1A are among the few components NOMOS doesn't produce in-house. This special alloy is composed of different metals that remain largely unaffected by temperature fluctuations.
