The Rolex Datejust 16220: What makes this reference so special?

In this video series, we zoom in to take a closer look at one specific watch model. This time, we’ve chosen a true classic, the Rolex Datejust ref. 16220 with a 36-mm case and deep blue dial. The Datejust first appeared in 1945, but today’s reference dates back to 1996. At first glance, not much has changed compared to the watch’s predecessors like the ref. 1601 or 16014 from the 1950s to 1980s. But this is the secret to Rolex’s success: Everyone will recognize this watch! Skeptics may claim that everyone has a Rolex Datejust, but that’s a story for another day. As is often the case with luxury timepieces – especially Rolex watches – the devil is in the details.

The ref. 16220 lacks a pie pan dial, as well as the typical vintage Rolex lugs. Its power has come from the caliber 3135 since 1989, but the true highlight is – without a doubt – its blue sunburst dial. Under certain lighting, it can appear almost black; however, only a slight change of the angle will return it to its iconic bright blue hue. You’ll never have to worry about being bored by this Rolex Datejust. The 16220 hits the sweet spot between vintage aesthetics and advanced technology – it’s neo-vintage, if you will. So, what do you think? Is the Rolex Datejust 16220 the right watch for you?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below the YouTube video.
