Top watches under $4,000? Given current list prices for popular models, this sounds like a difficult ask, but it actually isn’t. At least not if you are familiar with Chrono24 and are prepared to buy a pre-owned watch. If you make use of the filter function, you will find many examples of fine watchmaking, iconic designs, and high-quality calibers in this price range. I did a search for this article and found a watch in each of six categories that stood out in terms of design, technology, and value for money. Here are the search settings I used:
- I set the price between $2,000 and $4,000, pre-filtered certain brands, and ensured the watch was in good condition.
- Condition: Pre-owned, from “very good”
- Production year: from 2000 (my personal preference)
- Scope of delivery: no preference specified
I also set out to make the collection as diverse as possible. I want to find a watch for every occasion and every situation that holds its own in terms of (brand) image, design, and impression. Of course, this is pretty subjective and adds to the difficulty of the task at hand. Some people like to collect watches from just one brand or only with light or dark dials – to each their own. However, my aim here is to create a collection that is as “colorful” as possible to show how diverse the watch market can be, even in this entry-level segment.
1. The Daily Wearer: Grand Seiko Spring Drive (ref. SBGA373)

Let’s jump straight in with a watch that will immediately make you stand out as a stylish watch collector. The SBGA373 showcases what makes Grand Seiko so special: The dial, in a fine champagne beige with a sunburst effect, is understated and elegant. In addition, there is the blue seconds hand with the “floating” motion that is typical of Spring Drive movements and has an almost hypnotic effect. Choosing a Grand Seiko makes it clear that you are taking the road less traveled and are prepared to look beyond the familiar brands such as Rolex, Omega, and Tudor. Grand Seiko also stands out with its outstanding technology and vertical integration, which is evident in the famous Zaratsu finishing on the 40-mm case and the 72-hour power reserve of the caliber 9R65. The mechanical movement with electronic regulation also boasts an accuracy of ±1 second per day. It is really hard to believe that this watch can be found used for less than $4,000.
2. Diving Watch: Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M (ref. 232.30.38.20.01.001)

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean stands for extreme resilience and sporty luxury. Compared to the better-known Omega Seamaster 300M, it is the more professional and somewhat more conservative diving watch from Omega. The ref. 232.30.38.20.01.001 comes with what I consider to be a very good case size of 37.5 mm, a unidirectional rotating dive bezel made of ceramic, a screw-down case back with a Seamaster engraving, and a comfortable weight. Inside, you’ll find the Omega caliber 8520, a co-axial automatic movement with COSC certification, a power reserve of 50 hours, and a silicon balance spring for optimal protection against magnetic fields. This is a major benefit of buying an Omega. The water resistance of 600 m (1,970 ft) is more than enough and makes the Planet Ocean perfectly suited for professional dives. In terms of summer vacation, the Planet Ocean’s compact size, understated design, and date function mean it’s at home around the dining table, too.
3. Dress Watch: Omega De Ville Prestige Co-Axial Master Chronometer 40 mm

Some experts are predicting that the dress watch will be the most popular watch category in 2025 and that the focus will move away from sports watches. At this year’s Watches and Wonders, dress watches, e.g., from Jaeger-LeCoultre, were among the most popular models at the show. And personally, an elegant watch with a silver dial and black leather strap belongs in every collection. White gold or silver is the dream obviously, but with a budget of $4,000, it would be hard to come by. My choice is therefore the Omega De Ville Prestige. The latest De Ville Prestige has been revised from the ground up: new design, new technology, new charisma. The domed sector dial and applied indices looks classic, but not old-fashioned. Dial, indices, case – everything is kept tone-on-tone and very discreet, which I personally love. Inside ticks the METAS-certified caliber 8800, which is antimagnetic up to 15,000 gauss and equipped with a co-axial escapement. The 40-mm case has a classic look, but certainly makes a statement. This is a dress watch with technical ambitions – as you would expect from Omega.
4. GMT Watch: Tudor Black Bay GMT (ref. M79830RB)

One category that makes it into the watch magazines and onto Instagram, especially in summer, is that of GMT watches, or watches that can display a second time zone. With the obligatory bezel and GMT hand, this category not only brings a practical function to the collection, but also a touch of color. Tudor was narrowly defeated in the selection of previous categories, so I have now chosen a model from the brand here. The Black Bay GMT brings the classic Rolex design language without the Rolex price. With its 41-mm stainless steel case and a water resistance of 200 m (656 ft), this watch is robust and suitable for everyday wear and adventure. It has a two-tone aluminum bezel in blue and red (Pepsi style), the typical snowflake hands, and a highly functional in-house movement: the MT5652 with an integrated GMT function, 70-hour power reserve, and COSC certification. The watch has a traveler’s GMT setting, i.e., the main hour hand can be adjusted in hour increments, which is ideal for travelers. Whether on a leather, steel, or textile band, this is a serious GMT watch at a fair price. My favorite is the newer version with a light dial – a mood lifter in any collection.
5. Chronograph: TAG Heuer Carrera (ref. CS3110)

We can’t choose an Omega or a Tudor again! Although these brands are very strong in sub-$4,000 range. But that’s not the only reason why I chose this neo-vintage dream: the CS3110 brings back the spirit of the Carrera of the 1960s – with classic pump pushers, a narrow bezel, snow-white dial, and hand-wound Lemania 1873 caliber (a relative of the Omega caliber 1861). TAG Heuer has been on everyone’s lips when it comes to aesthetic chronographs, and not just since the launch of the TAG Heuer Glassbox in 2024. The case of the Carrera measures a slim 36 mm, which is almost avant-garde today. This watch is for purists looking for a classic racing look and mechanical elegance without any frills – although you can’t do without them completely. But here they have functional benefits! I’m referring to the tachymeter scale, the hands in light and dark blue, and the indices in creamy beige patina. This one is a real eye-catcher and a welcome change from silver and black. TAG Heuer at its best, you could say. The TAG Heuer Carrera is the second watch on a leather strap in this collection. Which reinforces my choice of the GMT Tudor on a stainless steel bracelet.
6. Field Watch: IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic Spitfire (ref. IW326801)

Frankly, I’m rather uncertain about this category. Personally, a field or military watch is not a must in my collection. However, since watches from this sector can be clearly differentiated from others in terms of history and design, I would also like to include this category. I’ve always been attracted to the Spitfire. It has everything I associate with a field watch: inspired by historical on-board watches, a reduced dial, a NATO strap, a round black dial, and yellowed indices or luminous material (in this case “faux patina”). Inside the 39-mm case is the in-house movement caliber 32110 with a 72-hour power reserve, date display, and automatic winding. It’s a real tool watch that can do more than just look good. What I find exciting about military watches is that they have a certain minimalistic quality and can be perfectly combined with vintage or outdoor attire. I can’t help but think of Barbour jackets, an old Range Rover, and bad English weather – that’s it! A field watch not only adds vintage charm to this collection, but also an outdoorsy vibe and new color accents thanks to the strap.
